Meet HopSkipDrive CareDriver Angela Reed

Written by Karen Sampson | Jun 14, 2023 9:28:12 PM

Angela Reed’s previous work experience as a pediatric psych nurse magnified her sense of empathy — and her affinity — for children and teens. Making the transition into semi-retirement, she began looking for a part-time opportunity that would enable her to continue to interact with and help kids. When she heard about HopSkipDrive, she thought it would be a perfect fit.

Since being certified as a CareDriver in May of 2023, Angela has completed more than 700 rides in the Dallas, Texas, area.

What do you like most about being a CareDriver?

I enjoy the conversations with my Riders. I often find myself laughing out loud with the interesting and quirky things they say.

Tell us about your caregiving experience.

I worked years in a behavioral health facility caring for children and teens with psychiatric and emotional issues. During that time I developed a deeper love for children and teens.

Have you had any special experiences with Riders that have been meaningful to you?

I have a nine-year-old Rider who I’ve picked up from school quite a few times in the afternoon. He is always super excited when he sees me pull up in front of the school. He tells me how his day went, and talks about all the exciting events that occurred. And he does the most heartwarming thing every time I drop him off. He says: “Thank you ma’am, I hope you have sweet dreams.” He’s such a sweetheart!

I also have a sibling group of three I drive. Each morning when I get them to school, they say, “Thank you, see you next time!”

Driving these children to and from school brings such joy and fulfillment to my life.

What are the most important things you gain from being a CareDriver?

The most important thing I have gained as a CareDriver is the ability to help and give back to the children in my community. Some of them live in shelters, some in hotels, some come from low-income families, and I feel joy in knowing that I am helping them — and their caregivers — by getting them to and from school safely. It’s nice knowing that’s one less thing their caregiver will have to worry about.

Have you learned anything surprising from your Riders?

Yes! I have learned that despite some of the trials we may face, life can still be joyful and our situation today does not determine our situation for tomorrow.

What do you tell other people about HopSkipDrive?

I tell all my friends and family about HopSkipDrive, and how much I enjoy being a CareDriver. I tell them how I enjoy the freedom of scheduling when I want to work, and how generous the pay is. Most of all, I talk about how much I enjoy interacting with the Riders, and how doing so has enriched my life.

How important do you think HopSkipDrive’s mission is?

I think HopSkipDrive’s mission is spot-on. Safe transportation is important for children of all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience as a CareDriver?

I’d like to thank the founders of HopSkipDrive for creating a wonderful tool to aid children in getting to and from school safely, and also for providing opportunities for people like me to be able to help children while earning a decent income.
