What made you interested in being a CareDriver?
Working with children is where my heart is. Having been a teacher, I have a love for children that really helps me connect with them. I was going through major empty nest syndrome, and being able to take children to school and back home makes me feel needed. It fills a void.
What do you like most about being a CareDriver?
Connecting with the children, letting them know I am there for them and being a listening ear.
Have you had any special experiences with Riders that have been meaningful to you?
If you show them love and respect, they will open up to you. I have one Rider who never talked. I started talking to him about things I thought he might enjoy, and now he doesn’t stop talking. His mom even said he is so excited to go to school now. That makes me feel good!
What are the most important things you gain from being a CareDriver?
Love from the children. A sense of knowing what I do matters. Respect from the parents and children. I feel like I have kind of become like family to some of the kids. I try to make them feel special because in my heart, they are.
Have you learned anything surprising from your Riders?
I have learned so much about cars from one of my kids. I’ve also learned about what is going on socially in the world. We talk about everything, and lots of times they tell me things I never knew.
What advice do you have for other CareDrivers?
Be kind and respectful of the children. Listen to their cues and respond in a loving way. Let them know you are there for them, and that you are a safe space. Be MORE than just their driver. Engage in their life, and you will never regret it.
What do you tell other people about HopSkipDrive?
There is safety in knowing CareDrivers have all been vetted. Parents don’t have to worry when their children are with us. We are doing everything to make them feel safe and cared for.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience as a CareDriver?
I’m so happy to be able to help those in need. I absolutely love having the opportunity to be a part of these children’s lives. I hope I can continue to do so for many years to come, and that I can watch them graduate high school and beyond, knowing I’ve had a little something to do with it.
