Meet HopSkipDrive CareDriver Marilyn De La Peña Cruz
Written by Karen Sampson
As a CareDriver in the San Francisco Bay Area, Marilyn De La Peña Cruz understands that safety comes first — and that parents and caregivers are trusting her to keep their kids safe. She has completed more than 200 trips since joining the HopSkipDrive platform in June of 2021.
How did you hear about HopSkipDrive?
My sister had used the HopSkipDrive app before to transport my nephew.
What made you interested in becoming a CareDriver?
I wanted to earn some extra income.
What do you like about being a CareDriver?
I like driving kids and having my own hours.
Have you had any special experiences with Riders?
I had a little girl request me by name on her profile. We grew a sense of trust (as I also did with her caregiver), and she felt safe.
What is one of the most important things you do as a CareDriver?
It’s important for me to gain the trust of the parent so they can have a sense of calm. When they trust me with their child, they know I will make sure they are safe.
Have you learned anything surprising from your Riders?
They all love to converse and sing along. Some ask me to teach them Spanish words — I found that surprising!
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a CareDriver?
Be patient. There is waiting time involved in picking up and dropping off. Also, you have to make sure you hand your Riders off to the next responsible party.
How important do you think HopSkipDrive’s mission is, and why?
A child’s safety is of the upmost importance, as is the trust between parents and CareDrivers.
Is there anything else you want to share about your experience as a CareDriver?
The support and help from the office has been great! They are there for me no matter what time, and they are always available to help.
