Meet HopSkipDrive CareDriver Tamara Rosas
Written by Karen Sampson
Tamara Rosas became a HopSkipDrive CareDriver in July of 2021 because it seemed like a good way to supplement her income on a part-time schedule. What she didn’t know is that she would find the experience of being a CareDriver so rewarding that she’d soon quit her full-time job to become a full-time CareDriver. To date, she’s completed a total of 499 trips in the Phoenix, Arizona, market.
What do you like most about being a HopSkipDrive CareDriver?
I love providing a fun, safe space for kids. You never know what they’re going to say!
Tell us about your caregiving experience.
I’m a mom to a 12-year-old boy with autism. I was a single parent for 10 of those years, and he has taught me so much! I just get so much joy out of letting kids be kids.
Have you had any special experiences as a CareDriver that have been particularly meaningful?
Once, I got to drive a 12-year-old boy with autism, and we had a long ride, about 40 minutes. The entire trip, he told me everything you would ever need to know about The Simpsons. He knew every single character, who voiced them, what years they were on the show — and even if the actor playing the character was still alive! When he got out of the car, he thanked me for talking about The Simpsons with him. I learned so much! ❤️
What would you say is the most important thing you have gained from being a CareDriver?
Patience! Driving requires a lot of it here in the Phoenix area. But also, there is a sense of pride that comes from getting these kids around safely.
Have you learned anything surprising from your Riders?
Besides everything about The Simpsons? 😂 I have learned that we have a surprising amount of children living in homeless shelters and in hotels. And honestly, it’s really heartbreaking.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a HopSkipDrive CareDriver?
Set yourself up for a good route. Don’t be afraid to plan it out before you snag those rides.
What do you tell other people about HopSkipDrive?
I tell them that I really love what I do. And that it’s a very rewarding way to make money.
How important do you think HopSkipDrive’s mission (to create opportunity for all through mobility) is, and why?
I think it’s extremely important. Getting kids to school and building that foundation so they get a good start in life is essential. And being a safe space for them while they are building that foundation is super rewarding.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with us about your experience as a HopSkipDrive CareDriver?
HopSkipDrive seems to be listening to CareDrivers and really working to make changes that are helpful for us — and the company. I appreciate that the app makes it easy for me to get a good route.
The company is growing, and I’m loving watching where it’s going!
